Zoe Lofgren, D-CA
Congresswoman
House of Representatives

Dear Mr. Vu:

Thank you for contacting me regarding maritime disputes between Vietnam and China. I appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts with me.

As a co-founder of the Congressional Caucus on Vietnam, I am concerned about the repeated maritime disputes between Vietnam and China, including the harassment of fishing ships in the area. I share your concern about recent Chinese maritime expansion, and on December 3, 2014, joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass H.Res.714, which calls on China to cease certain provocative and destabilizing actions in the Asia-Pacific region, including in the South China Sea.

It is important that all parties involved in these disputes adhere to international norms of transparency, the rule of law, and the freedom of maritime navigation and commerce. The U.S. State Department has repeatedly worked to resolve these disputes in regional, multilateral forums and reduce the threat of force. Please know that I will continue to monitor this situation, and will keep your letter in mind should further opportunities for Congressional action arise.

Again, thanks for being in touch. If I may ever be of any assistance to you or your family, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely

Zoe Lofgren
Member of Congress
